The winter pastures are mainly
distributed in the sandy and bushy wild derness of the Eerqisi(Ertix) River
Valley and northern edge of the Jungar basin. Here the snow is thin and animals
can eat dry grass by scratching earth so as to pass winter. When spring comes,
the snow in low-upland meadow begin to thaw, the herds men will drive their live
stocks to run after melting snow and move to the spring pasture. It is the
busiest season in the herding area, when they deliver lambs and rear young
animals; after cutting and selling wool, the herdsmen drive their lire-stocks
again towards summer pasture along the way they traveled last autumn. The Kanas
herdsmen do so in the Kanas year after year, thus called "nationality on
horse".
On the way to the Kanas lake , in spring and autumn every year, the Kazak herdsmen's grand migration processions can be seen. The trip will be as long as one hundred kilometers in household form. The husband lead the camels and cattle carrying yurt and furniture by riding a horse, wife takes care of child in her arms, boys and girl whip horses to gallop ,keeping the live stocks line and shepherd's dog acts as master's helper by racing ahead or behind. There are endless streams of migration household, with tens and thousands of live stocks in procession. It is a solemn and stirring scene. Such a nomadic migration has a history of one thousand year. Kazak nationality believe in Islamism, whose major festivals include "The Korban Festival or Greater bairam and the Rozi Festival or Lesser Bairam. The day of equinox every year is the Nuorozi Festival, a Kazak traditional festival. The grandest folk activity is an annual event of the Aken performance held in summer pasture. The Aken performance is a kind of antiphonary in Kazak's folk antiphonal performance. Dombra can be applied as a musical instrument of accompaniment to add excitement. Aken can make an impromptu performance in either question-answer way or repetition of opponent's singing words first and then win over him with his own creation in order to make opponent speechless as a symbol of success. The Aken Performance each year is like a grand gala . The herdsmen in the circumference of ten or twenty kilometers will gather here in different directions. They wear their gorgeous national costumes. Since both Kazak men and women are good horse riders,; they will hold their national traditional activities, such as horse race, sheep-skin snatching and girl's chasing and riding performance. games, including picking silvers on horse-back, archery on horse-back and riders' wrestling. |
